This publication represents the final act of the “Docente Europeo” Project, financed by the European Commission – DG Education and Culture – within the framework of the program Socrates Comenius 2.1.

The facilitation of the practical approach in the teaching/learning process of student teachers - students at post graduate, university level, or in the course of specialization for becoming teachers at secondary school level - letting them experiencing school life in a European environment is the core activity. The need to develop practical professional competences to a greater extent during initial teacher training was then emphasised by planning and implementing mobility of student teachers. On the other hand, considerable analysis specifically demonstrated that qualifications and skills acquired by teachers on completion of training vary widely in European Union; this is translated on the conviction that European cooperation between universities, schools, local (educational) institutions and authorities, the professional sector, local services, as well as transnational exchanges and support between all players operating at different levels, is exceptionally timely in enabling full and joint consideration to be given to appropriate provision for ensuring that all teachers have the qualifications and skills needed to deliver quality education. Identification of the key contexts or elements on which to focus at a European level, in order to draw up a profile of the European teacher, and to decide which procedures to implement or eliminate at a national level in order to develop and consolidate the European Space in the field of Higher Education were, consequently, the focus of the Research on the “transversal” teachers’ competences.
